Which monitor is better: the Sony G400 or E400?

And what is the difference? Is there a real difference in the performance of the monitors (as in clarity of text, etc.)?

G400 is better only because it offers better refresh rates and more resolution options, i think. Clarity will be the same since both use Trinitron tubes. Go to Sony's site and do a comparison between the two, you'll find the differences there.

Well seeing they are both the same company and the G400 sells for more, I would have to say that the G400 is better.

The F400 was the best, but it has been discontiued.

I have the G400, it is a great screen.

Yes, the G400 is better than the E400. It allows higher refresh rates at higher resolution. There was another aspect that was better, but I have forgotten. LXI would probably know.
