I haven't looked at the monitors at bestbuy in a while. I would say go there and look at the monitors and see which of them strikes your fancy. Since your monitor might outlast your current computer you might want to get one that is easy on the eyes. Personally I know very little about monitor teccnology, but if it has a really good quality to it, to you then it might be ok. Also ask them about the manufacturers warrenty and see which one has the longest.

Good Luck

Well it appears that the monitors at BestBuy are of the "cheaper"
variety. Lower max resolutions...etc....
The 2 that caught my eye were the 17" Viewsonic and the 17"
Samsung. Both flat screens with pretty good clarity..........Greg

Samsung and Viewsonic are both great monitor manufacturers.
There are mixed reviews about the Samsung 755DF (the DF series in general). Some rave and some complain. I think they are high quality but some get ones that were bumped around too much during shipping or something and simply need to RMA'em.
If it was the NF series you saw, (700NF?) this is an aperture grille and so purportedly shows better and more color with greater brightness and contrast than your conventional crt. you will have the 2 ever so subtlely visible lines 1 and 2 thirds horizontally across the screen. These are the damper wires that hold the grille in place. My impression is that the technology must be superior if they are asking customers to ignore these lines. You will not notice them after a while but some do. That is, as are most things with monitors, a personal taste.
People have different eyes and so one monitor may look better to one person than another.
So the best advice is to go have a look for yourself.
Look for sharpness not only in the middle but especially in the corners - where the rays have the furthest to go, and most to bend to. Good idea to look at an image that you have seen before and therefore can guage how well the monitor is delivering how you know the image should look.
Viewsonic is good too, but more expensive. the PF and GS (GF?) series are both top notch.
Consider LG and Hitachi as well. NEC too.
Good luck.;)

I have a 17" KDS Avitron AV-7TF that I bought for $219.99+tax after $30 rebate last summer from BB. It has a great picture mostly due to the fact that it's flat and uses a Trinitron tube.

I just got a phillips 17" to replace my old 17" (went bad no warranty)
from Best Buy. I think it looks pretty nice. $130 after rebate.

Well the Phillips is .27 and not flat. Aren't you worried about eye strain?
I've got a 19" Viewsonic Z90 at work and it's very nice. I'm leaning toward
the 17" Viewsonic at BB..........Greg
.
BTW...Did anyone purchase the 19" MAG when it was on sale last week?
How is it?

The Philips is actually .25, I've never had a flat screen and I'm getting used to 17" but I've always worked on 15" so it is actually a big improvement over what I've had in the past. Not to mention I don't like to pay extra for needless stuff. My first 17" was a CTX that I got new for $70 after rebate. I'd rather spend the money on upgrading my computer rather than my monitor.
Athlon 800
Epox 8kta+ kt133 (shudder)
256 megs pc100 ram
Geforce2 GTS/pro 64meg ddr
Cyberdrive 16x/12x/40x
Soundblaster live value

As you can see my monitor is not even close to a primary concern until it goes bad.

The Phillips Model 107s is .27 dot pitch per the BB web site. But
if the screen is clear and bright, so what? Now if I go inexpensive,
CompUSA has a 17", .27 for $89.99 after rebate. They had it
setup next to others and, really, it didn't look that bad.
Anyone heard of "Envision" monitors???
.
BTW: my setup........
Soyo SY-TISU MB with Celeron Tualaton 1.2 GHz
512 mg PC133 Sdram
ATI Xpert 2000 w/32 mg ram
Lite-on 32X CD Rom
Soundblaster PCI16
Win98SE
.
I'm not going to XP until I get that bigger monitor........
