Which Monitor (CRT/LCD)

I currently have a 17in. Viewsonic A72f monitor. I was looking to upgrade it since my computer (with a 7800GTX) can do a hell of a lot better on a monitor that can support higher resolutions. Now the monitor that I have can do 1280x1024 but the refresh rate just dons't cut it, so i'm looking to upgrade.

I really have 2 questions. 1.) Should I go CRT or LCD, and 2.) Which screen size should I get (or which monitor.) I'm looking for a fairly cheap monitor since I blew all my money on my computer.

The only problem I might have with an LCD is the ghosting. I read in another post (that I belive was you too) that the SCEPTRE has no ghosting at all. Now some people notice ghosting more than others. If you had to take a magnifine glass up to the monitor, would you see ghosting then?

That Viewsonic 19" is worthless because it won't do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz, so don't bother with it.

unless you have a boat load of money, in which case I'm out of my depth. I kept readin about fabulous Dell monitors, but the prices were usally 3 times my budget.

Well side by side the SCEPTRE has slightly better specs than the Hyundai. Either way you go though, I'm sure you'd be happy.

So does it really matter wether the maximum resolution is 1280x1024? Is that resolution ok on that monitor? Because the Viewsonic 19in. CRT will do 1600x1200 at 75hz.

For my personal taste 19" @ 1600x1200 would be too small on a crt. I ran my 21" Sony crt at that res for it's whole life, but don't mind the 1280x1024 on my 19" LCD now.

A few flaws that i have read about the sceptre lcd: bright blue led in front is blinding(no way to get around it), the buttons in front are cheaply made, is advertised better than it really is, 500:1 instead of 800:1 and 16.2M with dithering colors instead of 16.7M.

So it seems i am split between the 19in. LCD for $300 and the 19in. CRT for $219.
I guess i'll have to decide eventually.

Yeah SCEPTRE's a good choice. The Samsung both only has D-Sub while the SCEPTRE has DVI which is much better than Analog . . . The Hyundai Imagequest is overhyped somewhat . . .

I have a friend who absolutely adores his sceptre. I couldn't see any backlight bleeding and it felt like a step up from my 930b.

I'm sure you'll be quite happy with the SCEPTRE, I know I am. The only thing that I don't like is mentioned above (the blue lights on the front) but they're forgiveable since I have about 900 other little LEDs all over my office.

And I havn't been able to find a review of the SCEPTRE, from a review site like tomshardware, can anyone help me out there?

If you come from gaming off a CRT your entire life to using an LCD, it doesn't matter which one you buy, there's a very good chance you will notice "ghosting" in fast paced games. You'll adapt rather quickly though and won't notice it after a short period.

If you can swing it, I would suggest you look at the vp191b if you're looking for an LCD. I've played/owned with both the sceptre and hyundai and they don't really compare. They both have slightly less ghosting then the vp191 but after you compare the entire package(desktop use, build quality, gaming,etc) the vp191 comes out ahead for me. I also like it better then any of dell's monitors, never installed a 24" though. The vx924 looks like an interesting monitor but again I've never used it.

If you decide on a CRT route, you'll probably want to look for a classic monitor off ebay like the 1130/2060/2070/fw900 etc. Need to find a quality seller with tested parts for obvious reasons.

which one? (I be gaming on them, so keep that in mind)

Well you know my input, I went from a 21" Sony CPD-G520P (professional series monitor) to my SCEPTRE and don't regret it. I could get another 2 of the same LCD for what I paid for my Sony about 4 years ago.

I don't know what LCD you're using, but I have ZERO ghosting on my Hyundai L90D+
I get that it's not the flavor of choice for our befudled consumer here, but if he gets an LCD with a quick response time (and don't base latency on manufacturers numbers as they all lie, base them on review bench marks for a true measurement).

I said I was going to get the SCEPTRE, I guess not anymore.

I decided to go for the Viewsonic VP191B, simply because it is one of the fastest monitors out there and that there are reviews on it from toms hardware.
I might as well spend $50 to get a good monitor right?

I owned a l90D+ for about a week before I returned it for a refund. Ghosting was semi-obvious durning CS:S, since it's a slightly slower paced FPS but large motion shifts would generate it. UT:2004 deathmatch was extremely obvious as the high speed twitchfest would bring out it out.
