Which Model Playstation 3 to buy?

selling my Xbox 360 to buy a PS3. Mainly want to use it for blu-ray. Also, RPG games are my favorite and it seems more geared to those.

anyways, I am a little confused on which PS3 model to buy. Which are more prone to failure? Which are better than others?

I dont need ps2 backwards compatibility, and it doesnt matter to me if it has wireless (as long as it has ethernet port). Also I dont have to have a media reader built in. Just want the most reliable system with good blu ray playback.

lovely...

ill be selling my 360 just because...
since there is only an 80 and a 160... go with the 80.. and with the extra 100$ you save, buy a Sata HDD and upgrade the PS3.

thanks for the input, but honestly I dont use my 360 at all. Very rarely for Netflix, but mostly it gets used for playing DVD movies.

You should probably think again - the PS3 has very, very few RPGs, and most of them are strategy RPGs. If you want RPGs and Blu-Ray, buy a PS2 and stand-alone BR-D player, and keep your 360.

This. Unless you can find a used 60GB PS3 that is backwards compatible.

thanks for the posts thus far...the question was not whether to buy a PS3 or not, it was which one. The PS3 purchase has been decided..just wanting to know which one to buy

I think it is down to the following 3 models.

CECHK01 (new 80gb model made in Sept 2008)
CECHE01 (80gb model made in Aug 2007)
CECHA01 (60gb model made in Nov 2006)

I am just curious if anyone knows of any design flaws in the older models.. mainly 60GB and older 80GB model.

Old models run hotter, but the old 60gb also has the best backwards compatibility. Since you seem to think that your PS3 should be playing RPGs, BC with the PS2 is going to be the best way to make that happen. ;-)

Yep. The 60GB PS3s don't have any serious design flaws. Actually, none of the PS3s do.

I would definitely go with a 60GB if you can find it for RPGs.

I have a launch 60gb and never had a major issue. I just started buying PS2 games since they are so cheap, plus i gotta catch up on the God of Wars.

Which PS3 version to buy? It's quite simple.

A launch 60 GB PS3 or a Backwards-Compatibility 80 GB PS3.

Sadly, you're a bit too late to the party, unless you want to buy someone else's second-hand stuff.

Nothing wrong with that, especially with the economy the way it is. There's good deals to be had out there if you're willing to look for them.

The launch 60gb is still the Cadillac model. Full hardware BC, flash card reader, four USB ports. I expect though that it will be the most expensive on sites like eBay though because they're in demand. If you don't need BC for PS2 games, I'd go with the current 160gb model for $499. It's a pretty good deal. Comes with Uncharted and a voucher for a free copy of Pain on PSN. You would only save $36 by going with the 80gb and buying the same too games. Plus the $499 model has double the HDD space, which really comes in handy. To upgrade the 80gb to 160gb would cost at least another $60.

actually I ended up getting one on ebay.

it is a 40gb model with 2 games and spiderman on blu ray. In good condition for $270 after Microsoft cashback (which was instant!)

I didnt really need the PS2 compatibility and I can always put in a bigger hdd for cheaper than sony can offer it.

Just get the newest model you can. Sony systems tend to get more and more reliable as they make more an more revisions (true for all PS consoles). Naturally, the latest models will have more "kinks" ironed out, though the PS3 is overall a very reliable system, even down to the original model. However, I've heard of slightly more reports of failures or problems out of earlier models (particularly 60GB and failing power supplies). Keep in mind, this is all relative...still overall very reliable.

Honestly, just go to your local store and pick up the 80GB model. You'll be set.
