i am probably going to buy an athlon xp mobile 2600+, and was wondering what mobo i should get. additionally, i was also considering the lower power chips that amd produces (the 35W ones). does anyone know how these chips compare? i have already seen the abit nf7-s v2, but i was a little bit unhappy with the previous one because you have to do a solder mod to get the board up past 220ish fsb. any input would be appreciated.

The abit nf7-s has a wider range of voltage adjustments than most mobos. I wouldn't modify any motherboard to get higher voltage settings. It's the one motherboard that might work with a multiplier setting higher than 12. Most mobiles won't run higher than 12 on any motherboard. I would check out the overclock forums. Sorry I can't give you any links.

FYI, I think both the NF7-S and the newer DFI Lanparty Ultra boards will let you use the full range of multipliers of the mobile chips (up to 22x-24x)....whereas the older Nforce2 boards can only go as high as 12.5x

the dfi infinity/lanparty allow you to get above 12x...

for vcore, yes the nf7-s does have higher voltage options (2.25 volts) but has lower vdimm than the infinity/lanparty which tops out at 3.2 while the nf7-s only goes to 2.9.

but how many people use a vcore of 2.25? anyway...

as for modifying the board... it's not all that difficult as long as you know what you're doing... i've done the vdimm, vtt, and vdd mod to my abit nf7-s and it runs flawlessly

i'd say go for the DFI board. there seems to be some gripes about the latest revision NF7s. the DFIs tend to be better with FSB Ocing too.

I dissagree.
(again)

The NF7-S v2 needs no voltage mods to reach 220 on NB.
(only the v1.x needed mods for chipset)

However, the BIOS memory voltages topout lower.

Overclocking isnt gauranteed.
Be sure to get quality memory for a FSB near 220 using DC.

i never said they need voltage mods, but DFIs tend to in all respects hit higher FSBs in a 1:1 ratio. they are the best board for FSB OCing.

where did you learn what to do? i did a google search to try to find out exactly what needed to be done but couldn't find a good site after about 5 min of searching, didn't have much more time. i'll try looking again here in a min.

anyway, thanks for the info

Ummm,,, did you search Abit forums...?
(I know they are there)

Also, NforcersHQ.com has them also.

I usually dont do this for lazy people

(welcome to the forums BTW)
