The best Gaming on-board video card is the nForce.

BUT if you can wait 2-3 weeks then get teh new nForce2. It will have a newwer vidoe card on-board.

Any impressions on how the onboard would compare to one of today's vids and which one?

original nforce compares to the geforce2 MX...new one compares to the geforce4 mx
not that great, but the best as far as onboard video goes.

nForce onboard video is said to be on par with a GeForce2MX 200 or so. If you intend to use the onboard video, then nForce420D is the best choice, not nForce220, because the onboard video needs memory bandwidth and the 420D has the dual-channel memory controller. It makes a big difference, judging by the benchmark results: click for AnandTech review Keep in mind that, for the dual-channel memory controller to do its thing, you need two DIMMs (preferably identical) and must put them in certain slots (consult motherboard manual).

edit: I guess it's worth noting that the nForce 420D is getting over 100fps in Q3A at 640 x 480... definitely "playable" :D

Yup what
said.

I hooked up the mother in law with the 220, works for her.
If you want features 415D is way to go with no video
with video go 420
;)

The onboard dolby is nice.

Considering she'd be getting about 5 fps, I don't think she'd stand a chance!

Hehe... actually, she'd get more like 15-20fps, it's not THAT hard on the video card... I was playing UT2003 Demo on an 8Mb TNT2 Vanta for a while! :D

I'm not kidding! :D But it WAS definitely nice to throw the ol' $47 GeForce2 GTS-V in there again, after running on the Vanta for a while. What's surprising is that the Vanta can actually do the reflective water effect. However, it can't do the shield-hit effects that surround the target in a green aura when you hit them with the plasma ray.
