Which mobile CPU will be better for me?

I'm building a mobile DAW (digital audio workstation) so I need as much CPU as I can afford.

I've got my eye on two laptops by Eluktroniks

One has the i7 7700HQ
The other has the i7 6820HK

Some things I understand
- the 7700 is Kaby Lake, the 6820 is Skylake
- performance diff between stock parts should not be huge
- the 6820HK has an unlocked multiplier, so presumably I'll be able to overclock it, though how much I have no idea

Thanks all,

Realistically both are nearly the same. The process for the 7700HQ will allow it to clock higher but per clock there is really no difference. The 6820 has 2mb more cache, is clocked 100MHz slower and Turbo's to 200 MHz slower. You really won't be able to tell the difference between the clock speeds, the cache might help but I doubt you will see much.

Really without knowing anything else about the system (like even if the 6820hk is overclockable in that system), I would lean towards the 6820 because it would probably be cheaper and you wouldn't need workarounds to get it to support windows 7 if you want it to.

Overclocking on laptops has gotten pretty good, especially if you re-apply your own thermal paste. You should be able to sustain 4.4 GHz with solid cooling in games even with insane voltage. Amazing how well Laptops and Overclocking can work these days.

But I would wait and get Coffee Lake or wven Mobile Ryzen in your Laptop. It is already in some laptops.

If I could get a sustained 3.4-3.6ghz on all 4 cores out of the 6820hk I would be extremely pleased. Do you think that's doable in an Eluktroniks laptop?

Easily. Any reason you don't want Coffee Lake? I mean if you can get a good deal go for it but it just seems pretty late to get a quad core. There are Coffee Lake DTR's.

Yeah its a good deal on this particular model, comes with a 980m.

What do you mean by DTR?

Is there a certain DAW plugin/software you are using? And is there a reason why it needs to be a gaming laptop? You can save money and get any laptop with a fast CPU, since that's the only thing that gets utilized in the software. Don't need to worry about getting a laptop with a mid to high range GPU, since it just eats away at battery. Unless you plan on being plugged in the entire time.

I personally doubt there will be a 6 core mobile Coffee Lake. Would there really be a reason to wait out a 4c Coffee Lake over Kaby Lake and even then would there be a good reason to spend more on either of those two over the 6820?
