Hum. Bit of an issue; I want to shrink my haswell refresh window system from atx to mini-it without reinstalling windows 7. Sadly I cannot find z97 mini-itx motherboards (there is a gigabyte; but the prefer mb is asrock z97e - is no longer sold). I can find the following boards for sale:

Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE/WD Motherboard with Intel Z77 Chipset ($210); z170

Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI Mini-ITX Motherboard ($120)

Some z170 board.

The primary objective is stable and reliability WITHOUT reinstalling windows 7. I have an i7 (haswell refresh 4790k?); an i5-2500k and lots of ddr3. If I go with the z170 I would have to spend more (ram+cpu) and I'm worried windows 7 will have more issue without reinstall.

Obviously the i7 is the faster cpu (I *think* the i5 is fast enough for most games for the next few years). The gpu is an r390 but I will upgrade to 1070 at end of nov.

I am surprise how quickly the mini-itx z97 boards became unavailable - there are a lot of h97 - so maybe one of those would be good enough ?

comments/suggestions ?

If you don't overclock, h97 is fine. If you do, Z97 is mandatory.

You'll need an 8x or 9x motherboard for a haswell cpu. The others won't work. Since you have a Refresh, you'll need an updated BIOS. Stick with 9x to be safe.

You can find its z97 boards but price will be high. Sell the 2500 to defray.
