Which massage should I get?

A few weeks ago I woke up with a bad muscle spam on the right side of my neck, preventing me from turning my head all the way. I tried to self medicate with lots of coffee and alcohol, but I couldn't get it to relax. Someone here suggested I sleep flat on my back with no pillow - I did that, and it helped. Over time its worked itself out but I still have a kink that won't go away. I saw a chiropractor but that didn't help at all. At first the spasm pulled a muscle down into my back creating another knot - but that worked itself out then left some upper back tension. It hurts when I first lay down and when I turn my body.

I'm going to setup an appt. for an 1 1/2 hour massage. I'm wondering what will help the most.

after you get the massage, get a chiropractic adjustment so it doesn't go right back to the way it was. either that or see a chiropractor with a massage therapist on staff. a lot of times, chiropractors will just adjust without working the muscles with people in your situation. really, it's a reflex arc... an irritated nerve increases the intensity of whatever signal it's sending. the nerve tells the muscle to spasm... then the muscle in spasm sends a signal back to the cord and fires on an interneuron which tells a nerve to keep firing on that muscle. once you get the massage, it stops sending the signal as much. when you get the adjustment, it'll remove the irritation on the nerve which caused it to start firing in the first place.

also, it might be good to investigate getting a new pillow as well as keeping away from the alcohol and caffeine... that'll only make it worse.

The chiro I went to did have a masseuse onsite. The first time I went I saw him immediately after my consultation. To be honest I thought she did very little for my neck, and relied more on some table that folded back and forth while she pressed some spots on my back. The masseuse decided to focus on something that had nothing to do with my neck. So when I left there I didn't have any relief and I had a lot of residual pain from the spots the masseuse worked on.

I miss my old chiro in PA. :(
