I want to get a portable CD-RW drive for my IBM Thinkpad T21 laptop. IBM offers a CD-RW drive that goes in the machine's UltraBay 2000 slot but it's limited to 8x, plus is backordered for months and not cheap (around $400 cdn), plus it probably won't be compatible with my next laptop.

So my thoughts turn to external portable CD-RW drives. Of course, Parallel is not an option and USB 1.x is not attractive either. So I guess my choices are Firewire or USB2.0, either of which will require a PC/Cardbus card addin, which is fine. I just don't know which interface is the best to go with, or what drive to get.

Yamaha has their CRW70 , which is USB 2.0, supports 12x/10x
Iomega has a 8x/4x drive that is Firewire which I am less impressed by because of the low burning speed.

I think I favour Firewire honestly, since I'm going to have to buy an addin card, it is more likely that my next laptop would have USB 2.0 over Firewire ports I would imagine, the Firewire card will have more long term usefullness. (Would like to get a DV camera someday)

Any thoughts on this subject, or recommendations of other models of USB2.0 or Firewire drives that I have not seen? I'm especially interested in a Firewire drive that supports faster burning speeds. Portability is a must though.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for Cardbus USB2.0 and Firewire cards?

Thanks.
