My first linux experience was with Phatlinux, which worked but wasn't anything flash. I then downloaded debian linux off the net and got that half running. So I purchased a slakware CD, which I've had running and from what I saw was impressive. But for a newbie what is the best flavor to learn linux? And where can I obtain a copy?

Well the two most popular Linux distributions are mandrake and redhat... Both should be good for beginning... mandrake's link is avaliable from the post above, and you can get RedHat from RedHat

I would go with Red Hat, it's biggest and that gives you a that many more that can give you dist specific help.

Mandrake is very solid, but I would also recommend SuSE LiNUX 6.4 and the lastest version of Caldera. I cut my teeth on Slackware, but I run SuSE 6.4 now 🙂

suse 6.3, i have it running now, im sure the latest one is just as good.

also heard great things about mandrake, but never tried it.

I just bought the full package of Mandrake 7.1 (he says the newest version) complete with manuals for $10 retail packaged.

I'm going to install it sometime this week.
