Ive been away from the Linux world for some time, I use to run Slackware v2 quite some time ago, but since then I have not really played with it. I recently got the urge to get a copy of Linux and install it but since there are so many variants my question is this... is there one varient that is any "better" than the other. I realize that this is a subjective question, but I just need some opinions. Also, Ive heard some good things about the new xfree v4 (i think thats the right version)... is it any good? Thanks for the opinions and suggestions...

Go with the latest version of Mandrake or SuSe Linux, they're the most userfriendly.

Make sure that you get a Linux distro with KDE 2.0 :)

HI,

I'll jump in and say Mandrake as well. The 7.2 Final release just came out this weekend. It's on the mirrors, but the main web site hasn't said anything yet. I just finished installing it from ISOs and this is one of the first sites I've gone to (after Mandrake's then slashdot).

I've been playing with Mandrake for about 6 months, previously the 7.0, 7.1 then a few betas of the 7.2. I've been eagerly awaiting this 7.2 release to use it as a 'real' install. The rest were all just for playing around with and I often managed to mess them up. This time around I'm going to give it an honest try and see if I can convert to this as my primary OS (except for games).

I used to be an old FreeBSD user, but that was years ago. I'm finding that things have changed ALOT and having a user-friendly version of Linux, like Mandrake, helps.

My vote is for Mandrake. It's easy to install and with things like supermount, Drakconf and such it's very user friendly for users like me who don't have a lot of experience with Linux.

I'm going to say Mandrake as well, and it seems as though the majority of people have the same feeling.

I'm sitting here pondering this ... Why oh WHY is this in General Hardware? I know there must be a reason... I just don't get it ... maybe I'm slow.

Thanks for all the feedback... ill have to give mandrake a try...

RSI: Its in the GH forum because it in here is where everyone is... thus garnering more responses... i know its kinda lame, but if i posted this in OS's i prolly wouldnt have gotten half the responses... Plus i needed a quick response, am planning on slapping linux tonight/tomorrow.

no self respecting linux user is goign to use mandrake if he knows how to run it. stick to slackware if you have experience with it, its still better than redhat and others.
