Which Linux operating system would you guys recommend for beginner???

RedHat and Corel are supposedly the most user-friendly to install and start with.
(never tried either so can't say myself, thats just their reputation)

Try the SuSe distribution. I started with it too (as much a newbie as possible) and found it quite easy to install and use. This was version 6.3, the current version is 7.0 with the next version coming 🙂

I just did my first installation a few days ago with Caldera...and I also tried Mandrake 7.2...both were easy to understand....

Mandrake 7.2 is a no brainer. I like RedHat, but Mandrake comes with more preinstalled goodies. I hear Corel has a nice Windows to Linux transition Linux distro, though I have never played with it. Caldera is pretty cool, especially since it lets me play Pac Man while it installs, though I really don't like Grub as a boot loader.

All in all, I'd say the clear cut winner is Mandrake 7.2 for ease of installation and preinstalled software.

I have had the best luck with Caldera, it is easy to install, and most of it actually works, unlike some other distros. Mandrake is quite good too. As an aside, I have found KDE to be a much more stable desktop than Gnome, though it doesn't look as cool.
I never could get Gnome to work reliably for some reason. It may be better now, though, haven't tried it lately.

I know Linux is a powerful and robust OS. If you are looking for a home use OS then save yourself a few bucks and forget it. Setting up and trying to use Linux at home is a disappointing pain in the a$$.

eh yoshi? save a few bucks? it's free =P I just got redhat 6.2 up and running on one of my old p166's... got ipchains and dhcpd running to share a blazing fast 56k connect with the rest of my family, now that I'm home from school for a few weeks... also got smb running to screw around with... the howto's were really helpful... Mandrake is pretty easy to set up as well- can't get any easier than gui rpm installers 😛

Personally, i would recomend Corel Linux for begginers, it is clunky and slow, but easy to use, it is plug and play, and installs without the user ever seeing a prompt, its a good starter system, but You would want to go to something like mandrake or redhat once you get comfortable and proficient.

Just a few months ago I didn't know Linux from a hole in the ground. Then I d/l Mandrake 7.2 at 600kb/sec and downloaded 1.2GB in an hour or so, sorry gotta bragg!!

Anyways installation was so simple, you click on beginners install and just watch it do things itself, personally I found it easier to install then windows. I HIGHLY recommend Mandrake 7.2 for the beginner.

Mandrake or Corel and then try other flavors...but for direct newbies these two are the least troublesome for the beginning.

I would say Mandrake 7.2 is best for beginner. You can install it from windows too as you can
do with BeOS 5 Personal. You could give try to BeOS too. You can install and remove it as it
was just another windows program.

Don't install anything other than Linux Mandrake 7.2.. Trust Me!!!! Has the best support for your hardware, and will automatically set it up for you.
