which linux distro

sorry if this is a repost, but which distro is most newbie friendly (just for running d2ol basically), SuSe, Mandrake, or Redhat?

Well, I run Mandrake 9.0 and I hadnt seen linux before, but it sure was easy to install.

With a little help from Poof, I even got Seti@Home installed withinmy first couple of hours

As I understand it, you should go wrong with any of the distros you listed, as long as you take the latest version.

Mandrake 9.0
Red Hat 8.0
Suse 8.1

those three are the most windows like = easiest to get started with, all are very similar
pick one and if you have any problems , try one of the other two

I personally love RH8 more than any other linux distro out there atm. It is
definitely the best for a newbie.

There arent any Linux distros that are "Windows like". There are distro's that are easier to install than the old 4.x and 5.1 days, but then again we were mostly installing off of the FTP install dicks so it really wasnt that difficult, as a matter of fact that was by far the easist way to load it.

If you can read and follow directions you can install Linux, or any other OS whether it has a GUI install or not.


As for the OS itself, the only thing "Windows like" would be your choice of X-Windows. When I run X, I like GNOME, its a preference, just like RH vs. SuSE vs. Mandrake. All and all you cant go wrong.... unless [root@tbates757 /]# rm -rf
