I tried mandrake, but it didn't do anything (couldn't install properly) and even though I like mandrake, I can't wait for 8.2 to come out.

So which other newbish distros should I try?

Mandrake and RedHat are usually the 2 most popular linux distros...

If mandrake doesnt work for you, try RH...

You should be able to find lots of help online with both these distributions...

I would suggest RedHat over Mandrake, The install process is CLEAN as can be for either, I just think RH is a better bet.

I run RH7.2 on a VMWare workstation now (as we speak it is hosting my development software for Apache, PHP, MySQL and PERL and whatnot).
Loads of fun, VMWare rocks!

Debian, or Slackware. I prefer the former, but have used the latter quite a bit in the past.

I've found that, in most cases, the more they attempt to elucidate the installation process for RedHat or Mandrake, the bigger pain in the ass it becomes. I guess if you're not wanting to really delve into Linux, then RedHat/Mandrake may be easier, but if you're not wanting to delve into Linux, why are you wanting to run Linux at all?

I ran Mandrake 7.0 and upgraded along the way to 8.1, but now I've moved over to SuSE 7.3 for the time being. It's pretty good, not quite as n00bish, but still has config utilities for when I start pulling out my hair :)
