I've just finished downloading the images from the oracle website but I'm sure on what linux distro I should get. I had ubuntu installed a couple of days back but that didn't help. If any of you guys have a solution please share them here cos I'm in desperate need.

Thanks

Is there a recommended kernel to run on with that version of Oracle?

Oracle is pretty strict about which distros are supported. I think RHEL and Suse Enterprise are the only ones. It *should* work on a free RHEL clone like CentOS or Scientific Linux, but you won't get any support from Oracle. If you're just testing, go ahead and try CentOS, but for a production server you'll be paying $$$ for Redhat or Suse.
