Which linux distro do you recommend for USB flash drives?

I've tried a lot of them and wasn't that impressed. Puppy and DSL didn't bring my wireless up and I found their interfaces to be odd in my opinion. Ubuntu works except it's rather bloated for 2 gig drive, which I have and it breaks when I try to update.

I've ran Debian and gentoo in the past (with a lot of effort which I don't think they're worth) so if something is sleak I will consider "advanced" distros. But honestly, I'd like to have something that just works getting me to the net via my WPA router without a lot of unecessary office software and stuff like that. What do you think?

I cant say for sure but I usually look at DistroWatch.com when I wanna know stuff about linux. I've played around with a couple of LiveDVD's a few times.

well, I'm not very good at this particular thing 🙂 but I think this link would help 🙂

plus I have a better solution ! 🙂
ubuntu is GREAT 😀 but as u said it needs 2 gig but what if u removed some unnecessary apps of these pre-installed ones ?? ! think it would be convenient ...... I mean why don't u just remove the gimp , open office presentation some or all the games 🙂 that means extra disk space 😀 u can also try Xubuntu it's an ubuntu-derivative for less powerful PCs 🙂

u can also edit an ubuntu iso to fit ur needs even b4 making a live usb from it 🙂 following the instructions provided here !

Sorry for the tired answer, but...

It all depends! 😀

I own three portables - sorta like "Goldilocks and The Three Bears." One is too small, one is too big, and one is just right.

And, I have several servers/workstations on this LAN - some so old, they should be in a museum (10-15 years old)!

Running from a USB stick is a different experience on each one of them. Some work okay - some don't work at all.

I love Puppy, for what it is. It's my distro of choice on weak machines! Runs great from a thumb drive - loads & runs in memory (if you have enough RAM) - and you can save your config when you shutdown (saves a few steps when booting).

So, don't count the Puppy out, just because your WiFi didn't work out-of-the-box. It's a very capable distro and rather unique in the Linux world. I've been using Puppy as a "Rescue Disk" lately - works better than some distros created specifically for that purpose.

Other than that - if you're looking for a recommendation - it (ahem) all depends...

For instance, I can boot-up Linux Mint 7 (via USB stick) on my $250 netbook, but not my $850 laptop. They both handle Puppy Linux just fine though!

I might suggest (trying) Linux mint 7, but it all depends on your hardware - your chipset - your BIOS - and so forth, and so on... you know?

Just curious...

Is this intended for a netbook/laptop or a desktop box?!?!?

Is it a modern machine or a doorstop - USB 1.x or 2.0 - yada, yada, yada?

Really, you're doing it the right way - trying this n' that distro. When YOU find "The One"... you'll know! 😉
