I'm pretty sure the newest kernel has USB support. I don't which distribution is using the latest kernel right now. Mandrake maybe? Also, which is recommended for relative newbie? I've used Slackware and Red Hat before, but I didn't really do much with them beyond getting X windows working. Thanks for the help.

The 2.4test kernels have some USB support (i have not used it yet though as I do not have any USB devices) you should check linux.com under hardware to see if your USB hardware is supported. im not sure if kernel 2.2.X has any support or patches to support it. i do not know of any distributions that use the 2.4test kernels however but if you know how to compile a kernel i would go with that approach as it will function better and you can select which options you want.

Mandrake is FAR from best. It's one of the worst. But yes, it's easiest. That's why I dislike it :)

Decent USB support will be in 2.4 kernel series (not out yet, latest is 2.4.0test8), but it has been backported to 2.2 and maybe Mandrake has included those patches. Maybe not. Don't know :)

im not a big fan of mandrake 7.1 although the installer looks pretty easy for newbies. however i believe that mandrake 7.1 has 2.4test1 as an OPTION, however im not too sure how stable it as i remember having lots of problems with the earlier 2.4 kernels.
