Most of my friends/family own Hondas and Toyotas. My in-laws drove a 98 Civic until about 320,000 miles when the automatic transmission went out. I asked them how often they changed the fluid, and they asked if that was something you're supposed to do to a car. My best friend got a 2001 Camry as a hand-me-down in high school with 180,000 miles. He put another 100,000 on it before trading it in for another Camry, and it was never once in the shop. I drive an Insight which is now at 220,000 and since the car was new (dealer records, I'm 2nd owner) the only non-regular maintenance ever done was replacing a leaky clutch master cylinder at 190k. My mother's '89 Accord finally went to the scrapyard at 350k with a bent frame from an accident, the car still ran fine despite having the most awful rat's nest of vacuum lines under the hood.

EDIT: I can't say for certain newer Hondas and Toyotas are as reliable, with all of the extra junk they put in cars these days, but historically, they have a leg up on domestic and European cars.
