I am looking to buy a second lense for my DRebel. Right now I just have the EF-S 18-55mm that comes stock. I would like to be able to completely replace it with another one that goes down to 18mm, but there aren't many of those. Here are my choices-

Canon 28-105mm f3.5
Sigma 18-125mm f3.5
Sigma 24-135mm f2.8

If there are any others in the $200-300 range and over 100mm zoom that I should be looking at please give me a link.

you should check out dpreview.com. their forum for 300d is very active. they discuss lens everyday. I would suggest you keeping the 18-55 lens, get a zoom for long end, like a quality 70-200 4/L or a cheap 75-300, and also get a prime like 50mm 1.8, which is a must have for most 300d user.

I'm facing the same problems...which lens(es) to get :frown:

Too many choices. Too little money :)

I'm looking at these -

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO IF HSM
http://www.fredmiranda.com/rev...2&sort=7&cat=37&page=1

Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom
http://www.fredmiranda.com/rev...7&sort=7&cat=43&page=1

Those two lenses would give me some pretty fast glass to cover a lot of different shots. I can put a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter on the Sigma to get me some very long zoom at the cost of some image quality and speed.

the tamron is really nice and if you read FM forums you'll see great comments about it...

agreed. my friend has it and it's very good for the $$$ spent if you can't afford the 24-70L lens.

edit: buy used from FS/T forums at fred miranda for good deals. i never buy new anymore after my first lens.

i was looking at the sigma 18-125 myself, some people raved about it, some people said there were sharpness issues. personally, it looked like a great lens and i thought the doubters were nitpickers but i didnt need it that bad anyways so i skipped it.

like the others said, go to dpreview and decide for yourself

I'm leaning towards the 18-125 right now, I was going to get the 24-135 but alot of people say that it has issues at f2.8 which is the only reason I wanted it,
I think I am also going to pick up the canon 50mm f1.8 while I am spending money. Anybody use that one?

If you're considering the 28-105, why not the 28-135 IS USM? Everything I've seen is that it's a very good lens for the money ($400 new, $350 used). I snagged one for $300 recently, and I don't even have a Canon body yet. ;)

The Canon you have listed is a very common replacement for the stock lens. I would go with it if you have the extra cash.

Most definAtely! It's also my favorite lens. It gives such crisp shots at low light (because of the 1.8).

I also wanted the lense to be fairly light and compact and the 28-135is really isn't. Hmm maybe I should take another look anyways.
