1920x1080 TN panels. :(

My recommendation.

1920x1080 IPS panel > TN. Bought one for my wife recently and it's gorgeous. Reviews suggest quality control isn't great, but mine came without any dead pixels or uneven backlighting. You might consider a 120hz screen or a TN if you play highly competitive FPS, but casual and non-twitch gaming will not suffer on this screen. I have a very difficult time recommending a TN panel unless you have a specific need (ie 120hz/3D/cost).

This one is also an amazing screen: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A?tag=at055-20
^ I don't own one though and can't personally vouch for it.

If you are going to choose between those 2 specific models...for me I would prefer the VS series mainly due to the positioning of the inputs. Vertical inputs piss me off.

I have an IPS and a TN now, and the IPS is better but not enough to make me spend more. I'm red-green color blind so that might play a big role in that.
The ones linked aren't really more expensive though, and I'll take a close look at them, thanks. My S-IPS display is a Dell.

I've read so much about 120hz (I'm not sure I believe all the claims) that I looked at those too. Some people say if you never see 120hz you won't miss it, so maybe I should just avoid it. I played games from 1986-today, so I've seen over 60hz and it does make a difference, but I never felt I was stepping down in a big way going from 120hz CRTs to 60hz LCDs either.

Looking at the Viewsonic and the Dell monitors, they look great but neither have displayport. I have a 5870 and currently use both DVI, so I'll need the displayport to use triple monitor.
I looked at this one for a cheaper 120hz screen but just don't like the looks of it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009300 My current LCDs are Asus and Dell and look nicer.

Both of my existing screens are vertical inputs and I'd have to agree. A pain to deal with vs the old days. I do think they look a little nicer but not sure how much that matters.
The VE is probably not going to get purchased due to this-

CONS:
* This is the big one but if you're not using DisplayPort, ignore it and consider this monitor at least a 4/5. When you use the DisplayPort connection, which you will probably use if you have an ATI Radeon 6xxx series card, you have to cut the signal first before powering off. That means you need to wait for your PC to power off before you power off the monitor. If you don't do this, the power button LED will turn violet / purple (which is not acknowledged as a state that it can enter in the manual) and you will no longer be able to turn the display back on. To resolve the problem, you have to disconnect the DisplayPort cable and the power cable, wait a few seconds, reconnect the power cable, turn the monitor on, and then reconnect the DisplayPort cable. This is a major hassle.

I'll be using DP. So no thank you to that issue.

Of the two you listed, that's the better one.

My thoughts: If you didn't have a conniption when you moved from CRT to an LCD, going back to 120Hz probably won't make much of a difference. The IPS does offer better color quality, better contrast, possibly higher PPI (depending on the resolution you buy), and better viewing angles. I'm not sure how colorblindness would affect this, but if you've seen a modern IPS and don't mind the difference, no worries then.

When I read people's testimonies about how 120hz was "smoother" and more solid of an image, it took me back about 15 years when I pumped up my refresh rate from 60 to 100hz in Windows 95... noobs. :) I had a utility that adjusted refresh rate in DOS too (Dr. DOS?)
I usually settled on 75hz in general in the CRT days. Kind of preferred it over the 100hz+ range.

I look at a TN (Asus VW266H) and a real IPS (S-IPS) daily at my desk, not that e-IPS stuff. The SIPS is better but not enough that I care. What I do find dramatically better is my plasma TV (Samsung). None of the LCDs have anything on plasma (which to my knowledge is a descendent of CRTs)..

Maybe this screen? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005390

Price is right, IPS + Display Port.

I'll take a look, thanks.

Just an update on this.. and thank you for all your recommendations.
I ordered the ASUS VS278Q-P. It will be here tomorrow.

My reasons are pretty much detailed in the thread but basically:
- I have an Asus now (VW266H) that is great (sits next to a S-IPS screen and I don't care which I'm using). SIPS has NOTHING on plasma in my view anyway.
- I'm colorblind (red green) so color accuracy is not possible for my eyes regardless
- The response rate is 1ms and input lag should be 0, like other Asus screens like my current
- Has DisplayPort, something I want to have on any new monitor purchases
- Was on-sale
- I had 120hz 15 years ago on CRTs. I always preferred to keep mine at 75hz anyway and never liked the "steady image" of 100hz+. I'm fine with the 60hz limitation.
- Is 1920x1080, some (all?) of the games I play display more onscreen with 16:9 resolutions than 16:10

Hope this helps someone else looking at a good gaming monitor.
