Which LCD for me?

Well the main reason I want an LCD is the fact that my 17" monitor, although it does its job (1024x768, 85Hz), its large and wastes my desk space.

LCD's have taken a massive price hit since I last considered them. Im from the UK so we are behind the times of sorts. Ive found a few monitors on offer over here within my budget and I would like some advice as to whats hot and whats not.

This would be my first LCD, used primarily for gaming (I play anything including FPSes) and will also be used for university work, mainly MS Excel and MS Word work. My Radeon 9800 Pro has a DVI connector and the old VGA one so either connection is available.

Wall mounting would be an interesting option but it wont be a deciding factor.

Before I list the few Ive picked out as looking good imo, I have one concern that I can think of. Ive heard that LCD's look best at their native resolution. If its native resolution isnt optimal for me personally or my video card cant handle it (I'll be sticking to my 9800P for ages), will I notice significant visual deteoration from using a setting lower than its native? say 1024x768 instead of 1280x960.

This list is in no specific order, Just in the way ive found them.

1. Samsung 17" Syncmaster 710N 17", 12ms, VGA, Wall mountable

2. Benq FP767-12 17", 12ms, VGA, Wall mountable

3. LG L1710B 17", 16ms, Wall Mountable, DVI.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please list them only if they are on this site (unless you fancy shopping around UK-based only sites). Any UK shopper that has any recommendations of what to buy and where from, advice would be greatly appreciated. Searching through a list of ~50 UK-based stores, looking at 100's of LCD's that I dont really know much about is a daunting and probably fruitless task.

Those are all nice LCDs. Just make sure you have a DVI port on your video card if you get a panel with a DVI connector.

Dell 2001FP in the UK

but very pricey... I think my whole computer cost about that

I'm not suggesting you get it, just saying where you can

and i would suggest you get a monitor with dvi, especially as the difference between 16 and 12ms is pretty minimal I believe.

Erm.... I would regret it a lot.

I could buy a half decent upgrade and a good 17", low ms LCD for that price.

Anyway, the price difference between a 17" Samsung with VGA and the exact same Samsung with DVI is around £60. Not worth it.

I think I might get that LG monitor that I linked in my 1st post, 17", 16ms, DVI/VGA and a decent price. Sounds good to me.

I too live in the UK,however you can find that model cheaper then buying from Dabs(good site but not always the cheapest) like here from Microdirect. .

This is a good search engine for UK hardware click here price wise.

I have a list of around 40-50 UK stores in my favourite, quite a few of which are local to me.

I use Dabs to search a lot since they carry a wide array of useful items and usually present useful/critical information in a neat, easily accessible way... I dont make all my purchases from Dabs.com because I can as you said sometimes find what I want locally or at another reputable online dealer for cheaper.

Thank you for bringing up the subject though.

wow. i was going to suggest the lcd i have-- the hitachi 174B-- which has been one of the best things i've ever purchased (next to my TiVo) and i was shocked to learn Hitachi has gotten out of the consumer LCD market. this sucks.

I happen to Envision...I have a good one you might want...anyhow, with the three choices you listed, I usually trust Samsung more.
