I've never had a laptop but I have use for one now and I'm wonder what to get.

Costco has a Toshiba Satellite model for $1k on sale now and it has a lot of what I want. Beefy HD, VGA port, HDMI, 16G of memory and a 4 core, 8 thread i7 processor - http://www.costco.com/.product.1002...23_DecMailer&wc_mid=2:93988&wc_rid=2:12592187

But the Acer V17 Nitro looks like a better deal - http://www.costco.com/Acer-V17-Nitr...-Keyboard-|-Windows-10.product.100232032.html

Other recommendations welcome.

I'm a little concerned with battery life but I don't expect to be far from an outlet most of the time I'm using it.

Gotta ask some preliminary questions before we can offer solid advice, I think.

The biggest one: what's your primary use for it? Writing reports? Video editing? Gaming? Or just an all-purpose system that happens to be mobile? I ask because it's tempting to get, say, a fast desktop replacement when you really want an ultraportable.

After that, I'm wondering: how much do you value portability versus raw performance and a large screen? If you're going to be walking with this laptop for long stretches (say, you commute or travel often) or have a lot of other things to carry, it may be worth the hits to speed and size to get something that won't strain your shoulder or chew up a lot of space in your bag.

I need to use an online app to do some work and a bigger screen would be helpful with that. I also figured I could put on my dist. computing project when not in use. But I'm starting to have second thoughts about this. I'm not sure it's really a justifiable expense.

For an online application? What are you using now that it won't work?
