should i go with amd or p4? it will be mostly for surfing and multimedia. no gaming, but it will get worked. also, which brands are good, and which are not?
 
Check out the new Centrino's (Intel), specifically the Dell Inspiron 600m, which many seem to like and it's price is reasonable. Other big brands include IBM, Toshiba and Compaq, those are the ones I like.

The centrino platform isn't just a processor, its a Pentium-M (which is MUCH better than a celeron is, in terms of speed, power consumption and heat production), and an intel 802.11b card. They usually have a battery life of 3.5 hours and above (usually around 4).
