I've noticed lots of laptop screens stink. Horrible viewing angles, colors stink, lots of ghost. Some look really good. My brother bought that Compaq on sale at Best Buy for like $650 AR back in June and it looks like crud unless you're sitting right in front of it. So, who makes the best laptop screens? Are IBM Thinkpads the best? I've been wanting an eMachines, but I may have to invest in a different brand to get a better screen.

Most people will say that the Sony X-Brite screens are the best. They have superior contrast and brightness, which gives them the edge. While this is true, know that they also have a huge Glare issue because of this, which can be annoying. So it's kind of a double edged sword.

Being the glare hater that I am, I'd have to say that I like the HP/Compaq 15.4 inch widescreens the best-- the contrast of the X-Brite is a little better, but the HP/Compaq's are technically "high-definition". Check out the Compaq R3240US-- it's a great laptop for the money, it's got an Athlon64 3200+ and 512 of DDR, with DEDICATED 64MB nVidia graphics, usually fround for ~ $1300 or less.

I work at Circuit City, and we are having a huge, rediculous sale on it. It's $1379.99 upfront, but after mail-in rebate, it's only $1099.99-- a freaking steal.

nice, and it doesn't have the glare problem? and it has good color and viewing angles? I really want an eMachines m68xx, but the screens seem so much dimmer compared to the rest of the laptops on display at Best Buy. Not to mention a bit of ghosting.

thanks for the info

those Xbrite screen, thou nice, makes the screen very very reflective which is a major downside.

its a pain to use them in a lighted room

my IBM's 1400X1050 screen looks sweet

Since I have a Sony Vaio laptop, I am biased towards that screen. I have a 16.1" screen with TFT Active Matrix. This screen is amazing....I go to the beach and during bright sunlight I am still able to view my screen. Not the case with most notebook screens.

I am not sure about the new Sony screens though. I have seen this glare-type screen which makes the pic look good inside, but do not know about outside. My model is 1 year old.
