Basically I need to dump my 4200 rpm hard drive cause it sucks. I am looking at 40gb 5400 rpm hard drives and I see samsung, seagate, and toshiba drives for $100.

The samsung has 8mb, the seagate is 8mb, and the toshiba has 16mb. Which one to get? Thanks.

it would between the seagate and toshiba IMO. i think i would take the extra cache and go with the toshiba although i dont know how much of a difference 16mb cache makes over 8 mb

The Toshiba would be a better drive, I currently use a 60GB 5400 and a 50GB 7200. I prefer the 5400 60 (the tecra that I use it in had the 40GB 5400, but I needed more space)

The seagate is nice too, but a bit louder. One thing to note, the Toshiba when it idles has a slight click to it, so dont freak out (this has been true of all their drives).

BTW: If you want I can sell you my 40GB, it was used for about 1 month before I got the 60GB.

bump for more feedback?

My current hitachi 30gb clicks too and it is annoying. But i heard the seagate has a whine that can't annoy people with sensitive hearing.

I have the Seagate 40 giger, with 8 megs of cache. From the benches I've seen, it is the fastest non-7200 RPM drive overall.
