I need serious help in deciding what to do about building a gaming laptop.

Would this be a good configuration?:

ASUS m6000ne, 9700, $869

Intel Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz, 400MHz FSB, on-die 2MB L2 Cache - Retail, $295

I plan on much gaming, and web surfing, and playing music, watching movies etc.... So, notebook gurus, is this a good option for me? If not, please suggest other cheaper, more cost efficient options for my needs.

its fine, but if you want a better gaming laptop, go for the amd. the pentium M is a very good cpu, not because it performs superior, its because of its battery life and etc. i actually like the pentium M a lot, so it just depends on you whether you want the amd or intel on this one.

Look at the eMachines M6810 (Mobile A64 3200+), it's something like $1300 after rebates this week at Best Buy. I have an M6805 (A64 3000+) and love it. They only have a 64MB Mobility 9600 though. Plays KOTOR, Painkiller, UT2004, and most new games acceptably though (this is compared to my desktop with a XP 3000+ and FX5900).

(stupid noob ques) would the 1.7 ghz dothart (dothan?) be good enough to run future games at med/low graphics settings? BTW, in the above system that I have configured, the m6ne has a 9700 w/ only 64 mb RAM... not good enough?

I would definitely get the Atlon 64 lappy. It is better than the P-M at pretty much everything except battery life, especially gaming. I got my wife a eMachine M6805 lappy and she and I love it. Good battery life and I can play any game I want to at the 1280 widescreen resolution. Even with eye candy enabled. KOTOR, Far Cry, Unreal 2004 Demo, ect... I would put in another stick of memory though. But I think you would be plenty happy with the lappy.

Yes, but after hours upon hours, the Asus M6000BNe Centrino Notebook is just a beautiful laptop. Hopefully my very stubborn parents will let me buy it :frown:

The Pentium M will be almost as good for gaming and you will have an actually useful amount of battery life. If you are going to get a mobile A64, you may as well get a desktop.

I think the 1.8ghz Dothan is out now.
Though part of the laptop for gaming is a good video card.
Watch for a 5400rpm hard drive vs a slower 4200rpm.
