Pentium M
Celeron M
Athlon 64 (mobile)
Sempron

~You will *not* use a Pentium 4 based laptop. Repeat after me, you will *not*.

Performance-wise it should be:
Athlon 64 - Pentium M - Celeron M - Sempron

Though the Pentium M should be faster clock for clock than an athlon, athlons are higherclocked, for the most part.

Now, on the battery-life side of things it should be:
Pentium M - Celeron M - Athlon 64 - Sempron

The Intel CPUs should have MUCH greater battery life, like an hour/hour-and-a-half more than althons. Of course, most people dont use their computers for hours at a time without using AC power but having 3 hours+ battery life should be nice.

Well, they're probably close. Celeron will give you more efficiency, but the athalon will give you more performance.

so if you guys were to choose between a celeron and a sempron... which one would you choose?

I would chose the Celeron M since 'cause of the battery life. Semprons should be OK if the price is low enough but I'd go celeron. Remember that you'll probably get craptastic video with either one so dont expect the laptop to be a gaming monster.

Stay away from Pentium 4's, stay away from Athlon XP's, stay away from Socket A Semprons. Pentium M is preferable but elsewise go for the right price.

Something with a celeron M is the best deal. It's got even less power consumption than Pentium M and is just as fast (+-5%) at same speed due to neligible cache hit with those shot pipes and it's signifigantly cheaper. Furthermore nobody can beat Dell's laptop deals when they have em'.

Second best in Pentium M or a Turion like a HP V2000/L2000 series, they the fastest Mhz-Mhz mobile chip you can buy but they expensive.

It's spelled Athlon. Not Athalon.

One catch with the Celeron M is no SpeedStep which shoots battery life in the foot.

Total performance wise, A64-M, Pentium-m, Celeron-M, sempron
Battery life, Pentium-M, Celeron-M, then A64-M, Sempron

The nice thing about dothan based celeron-m's is that they still have 1mb of cache, so they don't take a huge performance hit compared to desktop based celerons, but they loose all the speed step features that help the pentium-m with battery life.
