Can you guys help me. I have to take three semesters of a foreign language and I'm not sure what I want to take. I have it down between French and German. Which one is easier to learn, is most useful, etc.?

Thanks

I took spanish so you won't get any real insight from me. But i would think that French would be the easier of the two. My ex took french and once and awhile i'd take a look at the book and it didn't seem to hard.

I'm taking Spanish because it seems like that is the language that I'll have to know in the future, especially with a high immigration of hispanics...haven't seen too many German or French-speaking immigrants.

French is the language of love.

German is the language for good profanity.

You wanna be a Romeo or a Roughneck?

Don't be taking 3 years of a foreign language on someone elses recommendation. Here are some points to consider.

Have you taken any of these languages prior?
Do you have any family members who speak these languages?
Do you have any relatives that speak these languages?
Are you planning on going into any of the armed services where the languages would be benificial?
If you are female, french is better suited to your gender. Most men go crazy over it.
Do you have any family or relatives that speak Yiddish. German and Yiddish are very similar and usually one can understand the other.

Hey man, why do you want to take a language that everyone seems to take nowadays. Take something off the wall. Like Arabic or Hindi. Arabic is a cool language to learn and so I Hindi.

If you have the opportunity, take a language that you will get to practice. Never plan on going to France? take something else.

Spanish is probably the most useful language in the US, but I work for a German company and it definitely gets you ahead...

I was considering Japanese but I know it's real hard to learn. Right now I have to concentrate on my more important classes, that's why I want something that would be "easy" to learn. I took some Spanish in high school and I didn't like it, so that's out of the picture.

French isn't the most useful language here in the States, but then neither is German. French is spoken by more people worldwide than German, though, and you can charm the ladies with it, of course. ;)

Spanish is the most usefull. The Hispanic population is the fastest growing in the US. Other than that, French is probably easier than German but really a toss up.

if you did not like spanish, you probably won't like French. It is a similar but harder language to learn. Your background in this fellow romance language will give you a headstart though...

I would recommend German over French.

From an economic and technological standpoint, Germany is much more powerfull nation than France. This results in better job opportunities in the long-term if you are interested in working or studying abroad. Personally, I want to get my Ph.D at the University of Innsbruck in Austria so that is my personal motivation to learn German.

As for being more difficult, I personally don't think so. Both German and English are derived from the Germanic language. Because of this, they have many similarities. For example, sentence structure is very similar to English and there are several cognates. I have studied Spanish as well and I find German to be a much more enjoyable language.

Hope this helps.

according to my friends french is much easier.
in french you got your femine, masculine
then in german they add another neutral.

plus french is easier especially if you have a spanish background.

*kat. <-- used to know french but never practices.
