Which language is better to learn?

How long do you think it would take to learn Chinese or Japanese with no previous experience? 1 academic year?

unlikely, for chinese anyway. there are just too many characters.

actually maybe you can become conversational in it... i don't really know

Chinese... But it'll take longer IMO to master than Japanese...

If you watch anime, want the new goods that aren't in the USA, then go with Japanese...

If you're looking for a 1+ year learning experience, Chinese...

Chinese.

Specifically, I believe Mandarin Chinese would but much more useful than Cantonese Chinese.

considering mandarin is the "normal"/official language... yes, yes it would be more useful than our canto chinese. lol. 🙁

edit: i voted both because i'm stupid like that. 🙂

Chinese will be more useful diplomatically and industrially, whereas Japanese is better for business, yet many Japanese, especially those high-up in corporations, speak English very well.

I say Anglo-Saxon. Or Dutch.

It depends upon where in the world you are.

If you live in the United States for example, Spanish would be quite useful.

But of your two choices, I vote Chinese.

I figure if I decide to declare my second major as Chinese, I might spend 2 more years. Im okay with everything else except the fact that I want out of here ASAP.

chinese. maby its just because i am CHINESE... nah

anywho, chinese will take a long long long long long long time. turn each of those longs (including this one) and ull be able to master chinese. mandrin is best

just don't bother. I have yet to meet an american born chinese that can read a chinese newspaper. unless you start learning it at the age of 5.

chinese is designed for less than 1% of the population to understand it in the ancient time.

Right now, Japanese for business. There seems to be a lot more engineers and technical people in Japan right now.

But that'll likely change in the future. China is growing fast.

That's what makes it so desirable! I'm not Chinese either. I just feel like I can benefit by having language like Chinese behind my belt.

Have you ever been in a situation where someone assumes you don't know their language and starts making fun of you? After they're finished you respond back and basically own them.

if you want to master it, you will have to actually live in china then.

cantonese > madarin, curses wise. my mandarin friends agree curses in cantonese are just so much better.
