which job to take

i know you hate the smorgasbord of steak/engineering/interviewing/investment threads repeated on here ad nauseum. however, ive been wrangling with myself over this decision for a while, and wouldnt mind some extra opinions

background ncase you ask:
-im 24,
-single/unattached,
-background in geology,
-working in oil/gas but only doing 30% science.

-im outdoorsy.
-family lives in state.
-friends live in the city... hot, sweaty, nutsack-of-the-United-States city where i work for a huge company.


ive been offered a relocation to a beautiful mountainous city (A), and an in-town transfer to work on a new project that has huge potential to be a new business product (B)


job (A)

job prestige: 6
job intangibles: 8
career potential: 8
city/lifestyle: 9
pros: im good at it. manager loves me. lots of travel. big job "network" (colleagues worldwide, etc). of course, i love the city
cons: wont have friends in the new city right away. fewer immediate coworkers.


job (B)

job prestige: 7
job intangibles: 6
career potential: 10
city/lifestyle: 7
pros: more responsibility. potentially challenging/exciting work. big "start-up style" project could lead to huge advancement potential. all my friends live here
cons: more responsibility. potentially difficult, grinding tiresome work (fewer coworkers my age, less travel, etc). i hate the city.



basically, i could either be a corp sellout or pursue a better lifestyle (very very fond of new city). in one hand: im young, and i could afford to sacrifice social life now.... on the other hand: im young, and i should enjoy life now..... im currently leaning towards A, but B is an opportunity that does not appear often....

well, that was easy - the decision was made for me! due to some assorted complications, B is gone and im heading off to move to A :D

more or less. i would have liked a cost-of-living adjustment for A but no dice :(. wanted for them to play against each other but no go either. money is not so much an issue right now - it was about city (now) vs potential (later)

i'm voting A.... quality of life and your own personal happiness is something that you can't buy... well unless happiness can be found in guitar hero and a bucket of coronas... job A sounds like something you'd enjoy more, and it still has good career potential (only 2 pts down from job B)

woosh, so the decision (not so much on my part) was to move to new city. however, because im relocating for the job, i got the phattest relocation benefits. aside from obvious stuff like house hunting trip, packing, shipping, etc, got stuff like lump-sump assistance and rental assitance that alone equals a years worth of salary for a new engineer. worked out for the best!
