Which is truly better; 6800GT or X800XL

This is what my friend says:

Ati runs directx games better, nvidia runs opengl better. Depends on what game you are playing.

He tells me ATI's X800XL runs Battlefield2 better then Nvidias 6800GT.

I disagree.

Who is right??

I tell him 6800GT is equiped with SM3, he tells me it doesnt matter.

I tell him it enhances graphics, he tells me it doesnt matter.

X800XL is cheaper and runs BF2 better.

Who is right??

Seriously??

He also says 7800GT is overkill.

SM3.0 doesn't matter....to a certain extent. Just ignore SM3.0.

Depends on where you live and what games you play. For example, if you live in Canada, the X800XL is cheaper than the 6800GT by like $130. If you play a lot of HL2 (directx game) you would get approx 10fps better. For D3, the 6800GT is better. If you like turning on AA/AF, the X800XL performs better... Most people would tell you the 6800GT is better since they own it and because they are jelous of the XL because it cost less but with similar performance. But, you can't go wrong with either card.

overall the cards are very close in performance. neither card is clearly "better" than the other. i doubt you will regret buying wither one.

get the 7800 gt if you can afford it.

it all depends...i mean EVERYTHING you said depends. depends on the game, the system, the cpu, etc. look at benches on toms or anand.

i guess if you have a 2500 xp and you're not gaming any higher than 1280x1024, then the 7800gt is overkill.

do everybody a favor and look up the benches for yourself. in your innocent question "which is better" we all know what's gonna happen in the next 5 pages of this thread...
i'll edit this post with links so the thread doesn't have to continue.

1 question. agp or pci e?

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050524/vga_charts-03.html
look at the next few games under unreal tournament.

X800XL runs slightly better overrall. In some games, 6800GT has a slight lead and in others the X800XL has a slight lead.

As for better, I would say X800XL, since its cheaper and runs cooler.

Whatever you do, do not get the 6800GT since the 7800GT is not much more expensive.

WHAT ABOUT BATTLEFIELD 2

thats the only game we are arguing over.

WE all live in the United States!

F**K CANANDA. (kiding, i love u sexay)

may i have some replys please???

It really doesn't matter. It all just totally depends on what your specific needs/wants are. Either card would be a good choice. If you get the 6800GT and a PCI-X SLI mobo (assuming that you dont have one) you can upgrade in the future. ATi's Crossfire is a little ways off.

I have a PCI-E version of the X800XL as in my sig....very happy....

Runs BF2 at 1280x960 (battlefield offers funny resolutions) with most details on high and with full AA and AF......I just turn the dynamic lighting and geometry down a bit.... looks nice......gets between 40-80 fps...which is quite adequate for me anyway!

But on the other hand...if I had a 6800GT then I would also be very happy.....unless you have the 2 cards running side by side you would never realise which one is in the computer....

Basically whichever you can get cheapest then go for that!!

the bolded part is the only part i disagree with your friend about. everything else i agree with pertaining to bf2. you are wrong and he is correct.

lol...... i can run BF2 on high settings with a 9800 pro. So to me, buying one of those high end cards seems a waste

what is the rest of your rig and what resolution?

3700+ san diego, 1 mb value corsair ram, asrock 939 duel-SATA2, and the 9800. 1024x768 i think.... but i could increase res and decrease to medium settings i assume

You run BF2 with A MEGABYTE of RAM??? :Q

Take into account that almost all 6800 GTs can OC to 400/1100, making it better than the XL and many can OC much higher. X800XLs however, are not good OCers at all. Most people can only sqeeze a few MHz from both the mem and the core. If you take into account that the 6800 GT is on par with the X800XL, and you OC to ultra speeds, it will be significantly better. look at mine, I got it to 440/1150. I dont think x800xl will give you a 25% OC on the core or a 15% OC on the mem.
