Which is the fastest? i7-640LM or i5-520M?

Hello,

My company is forcing me to "upgrade" my work laptop. I have the choice between two machines: one "standard" laptop with i5-520M or an "ultraportable" laptop with i7-640LM.

I like the small form factor but don't want to give up any performance. I am not sure which processor is the fastest, since they both have similar specs.

Any advice? Thanks.

The i5 is a bit faster, but they're close enough that I'd probably go for the ultraportable instead.

Same turbo'd clock speed, but the i5 has a slightly higher base speed (2.13 vs 2.4, both turbo to 2.93). I would decide on other factors. Screen size, resolution, do you get a dock?, HDD, do you travel?, etc.

Ya take the portable 640 machine. The difference in performance is nearly impossible to distinguish.

In fact the i7 may be even faster in some tasks due to the extra 1mb of cache.
