Which is the faster CPU?

Stumps

Diamond Member
I have two CPU's that haven't been used in a few years, but now I have aquired a PCI BUS 486 mainboard that supports both and I would like to know which is the faster of the two?

the AMD am5x86-133 p75 (I have used these before and they were pretty fast for their time)

or

Intel 486 PENTIUM OVERDRIVE 83mhz (I have never used one of these but have had it sitting in a box for awhile)

has anybody compared these cpu's?

I think that the AMD chip might be faster but I'm not 100% sure as I have never used the intel model.

AMD am5x86-133 p75

the "overdrive" chips were pentiums with a converter to fit into a 486 socket. you lost bus performance or something, i forget

i had one of those AMD chips, it was cheap/fast back in the day

yeah from what i have read about the P83 Overdrive, it required a decent amount of cache to work well, but i can't find any direct comparisons of the two.
I remember overclocking my old am5x86 to about 160mhz (4x40mhz) and it was just as fast as my mates more expensive P100's and P120's

n00b. 😉

They're probably pretty similar in speed.

After doing a little Googling..

The Overdrive 83MHz scores about 580 in Icomp 1.0 and 58 in Icomp 2.0.

The Am5x86/133 AKA 486DX5/133 scores about 610 in Icomp 1.0 and 67 in Icomp 2.0.

Icomp is an old Intel benchmark. No idea if it's measuring INT or FPU power.. Probably INT.

The 5x86/133 was a great CPU. I ran mine at 160MHz. I had that computer for like 2 years.. lol

If you overclock the 5x86, it will be even faster. 😀
