Hi Guys,

I'm working with an asus A8N-SLI premium board and just recently bought an opteron 165, 1.8ghz (like 3 days ago); for 151 bucks off of newegg (link).

I saw this X2 4200+ 2.2ghz processor just go on for 122.50 though (link)

The Opteron is 400mhz slower, but has a bigger L2 cache (2mb vs 1mb) but it has a lower HT (1000mhz vs 2000mhz); and it is 28 bucks more expensive. I plan on doing some overclocking; do you think I should return the Opteron and go for the X2 4200+ instead?

Thanks in advance!!

I wouldn't bother returning it. The Opteron's overclock quite well, and the extra cache will help a little bit as well. $28 isn't worth the whole return hassle (IMO), and you may very well end up with a better overclock with the Opteron.

not that much to it, really. if you don't overlook something (not really that much, just fsb, voltages, multipliers, and timings), and assuming your other hardware is up to snuff, you should be able to get that chip to the mid~high 2ghz range. of course, no guarantee.

Opty's are known for their overclocking ability. Until recently it was the cpu most of the overclockers were sporting, right now c2d is where the overclockers are at. Opteron still isn't something you would have to be ashamed of though, so good luck oc-ing it, I've seen people hit 3ghz with it :) High 2's would be a fair goal for a first OC :)

except for us cheapskates. i ordered an x2 3600 with a tforce 550 board and a freezer 64 pro and 2 gigs of corsair xms ram. I paid ~$230 for all of it. stock 1.9ghz. should hit (or at least get really close to) 3ghz. now that's a deal ;).
