Which is the better/faster ATA-100 controler, integrated or external?

Generally the PCI card ATA-100 controllers are made by the same people who make the on board controllers. I'm guessing you will not see any performance differences between them. There may be stability differences, other people may have recommendations on particular brands of controllers. One disadvantage of an external controller is it will have its own bios which may add to the boot time.

Mark.

It depends how the ATA100 is made.... Promise is generally faster than any VIA or Intel chipset ATA100.... but ATA100 has very little advantage over ATA66... I think the VIA and Intel at like 85 for the burst rate and Promise is around 90.... standard overhead that causes it not to hit 100.

I would save my money.

Yesterday I finally got my HD running at ATA66 up from ATA33. Did I see any difference? Not that I can tell - ATA100 is just a hype.

Yo Jalapeno. It all depends on your HD. My IBM 75GXP can maintain an average throughput of ~35000mbps (according to HD Tach). So placing it on an ATA66 controller makes sense since an ATA33 controller would limit it. It is the ATA100 controllers that are a waste of money with current HD technology.

Oh i see, so from what you mean is win2K do support ata100, is just the harddrive controller available right now do not fully used the ata100. am i right ?

Actually, ANY board right now that supports ATA100 that is not on a i815E chipset board is a "add-on" IDE port. Thats why the A7V has a ATA100 bios boot-up. While the 815 supports ATA100 natively, no need for that.
