Which is the better chipset: VIA K8T800 or NVIDIA nForce3 250.

Both chipsets are good, and mature. That said, I would give the nod to the nForce3 250Gb chipset. It is faster (although this can be motherboard dependent as well), and uses less CPU cycles for USB, SATA, PATA, etc. The most stable motherboard boasting the nForce3 250Gb chipset also happens to be one of the least expensive--the Soltek K8AN2E-GR, which can be found for a paltry $85 at NewEgg. Another item in favor of the nForce3 250Gb chipset is the native gigabit ethernet. This is something that the VIA chipset does not possess. The Soltek board does not overclock well, but it is one of the fastest and definitely hell-on-wheels stable at stock speed. Highly recommended.

both are good but if your going to overclock, get hte 250gb. It has a pci/agp lock while the k8t800 doesn't. the K8t800 PRO has the lock.

Thanks for the responses. I don't really do any OC'ing, I just want the most stable and compatible chipset of the two.

no flaming involved, i'm just qurious what good are the via chipsetsets good for then.

I thought they were very stable boards that just didn't have the o/clockability of the nvidia boards

They often cost less than the nforce so motherboard cost less. Both are stable and mature, but the top goes to nvidia for performance. nforce is a one chip solution while VIA has 2 chips.

VIA's chipsets are stable, cheap and overclock very well (since the K8T800Pro / K8T800 rev B).

There's no answer to which is more stable, only different people with different experiences to give you a different answer. A lot of people don't like the K8T800 because VIA had issues a long time ago, but the K8T800+VT8237 is a very mature combo.
