which is the better card

Yeah, the 9800 Pro easily. However, there would be no point in getting a 6200 with 256MB of memory. It wouldn't help at all and just costs extra money. I too would rather go with the 6600GT as well for a little extra.

Actually, you CAN softmod the 6200 into a 6600 and then OC the hell out of it, and in that case, yes, it is better than a 9800 pro, plus it has Shader model 3.0 (which 9800 has 2.0)...it's all preference, but I'd just get a 6600gt.

If the 6200 softmods into a 6600 and is overclocked mildly, it will be close to a 9800 pro. However, of the two, you'd probably just be better off going with the 9800pro, or as like others have said, if you can spare an extra $15, grab a 6600GT.

what are u talking about?? u want him to use nitrogen to cool the card to "OC the hell out of it"?? even by softmodding it to a 6600 it doesnt match the GT and the GT is not a great deal better than a 9800Pro. first off, u cant be sure the card will softmod to a 6600, second, u dont know how good an overclocker it is!

get the 9800Pro or spend a little more and a GT

I agree. I own a 6200 that softmods to 6600. It is not quite as fast as a 9800 Pro. Unless you just hate ATI, then I would get the 9800.

You can get a 9800 for $115 shipped somewhere. I think Monarch has them for $120 shipped too.

The 9800 Pro is a better card than the 6200.

spend the little bit extra, get a 6600 gt
the 256mb on the 6200 is absolutely useless

There is a deal on newegg for the leadtek one -$20 rebate

First off, I have seen many many people softmod their 6200 to a 6600, then OC it (with stock HSF) and get 3100 points in 3dmark 05. A 9800 pro gets 2500. Now, I know it's a benchmark, but saying that a 6200 can't beat a 9800 is stupid. I'd like to know what YOU'RE talking about. Read up buddy.
But, you are right about the softmod thing, I'll admit that. Still, I'd take SM3.0 support over Sm2.0 anyday.

Monarch still has eVGA 6600GTs for ~$135 after ~$30 rebate, no?

Unlocking and then OCing a 6200 is a risk, whereas a 9800P is a sure thing. It's not as simple as saying a fully tweaked 6200 will outperform a stock 9800P. First of all, you'd be voiding your warranty. Secondly, you can also OC a 9800P.

Wait a bit to afford a 6600GT and you can avoid this whole mess. 🙂

Edit, also, TigerDirect? I thought they had a bad rep around here. I also think both those prices are high. I'd suggest either the eVGA from Monarch, or the Powercolor at NewEgg which is closer to $120 after a rebate. If you're concerned with fan noise, I think NewEgg sells the Sapphire 9800P Ultimate for $150.

Man, the 6600GT is still >$250 here.

dude, you need a friend/family in the us or something and have it shipped 😛

9800 Pro.

hans030390, who's telling you the 6200 is okay, is seriously delusional.
Even if you did manage to successfully mod it, it's still not likely to be as good as the 9800 Pro.
No sense in buying an inferior card in the wild hopes of making it perform almost as good as a card than can also be OCed to provide much better performance.

All that being said though, if you can afford about $30 more, get the 6600 GT
