which is the best linux live cd?

Compete with Vista how exactly?

Live CDs are simply a convenient, risk-free way of trying out a Linux operating system. I don't believe they're meant to "compete" with any full OS installs.

Not sure I'm going to test it out myself. But unfortunately Suse 10.1 dropped the ball this time around. Their release doesn't support Ralink, Prism2, and Atheros wireless cards off the bat. You are able to choose a KDE or Gnome desktop though. I would try their 10.0 livedvd. It had way more support. Oh I don't think you would have to worry about installing mp3 codecs as well with 10.0, but I can't remember exactly.

I still loves me Suse though.

I am a linux Noobie, however I find Ubuntu's live CD very cool and easy to use. The newest version 6.06 includes both the install CD and the live one in the same disk.

Puppy linux is nice as well as its small size makes it load in a matter of seconds, even on older PCs. I am trying it in my dad's old P4 and I might even install it as main OS.
