Which is the best investment?

I play a lot of strategy games, with the occasional FPS. Starting to get some slowdown on boards with a lot of units, and am wondering which is my best bet to hold me for awhile--new CPU/mobo/RAM, or new graphics card.

running now: Athlon 3200 at 2.6ghz, 1GB RAM, X800XL video card.

thoughts:
1. Upgrade to Core 2 Duo system with 2GB of RAM, keep graphics card till DX10 parts.

2. keep current system and add new graphics card (spending no more than $250 if I can help it), switch to Core 2 Duo next year.

I hate to invest in more DDR memory when I'll be switching to a new platform by next year regardless, and especially since it seems DDR is getting more expensive compared to DDR2.

Any thoughts or help is appreciated!

At this point...You could get a nice card this year..high end. And move to conroe next year when MB, CPU prices lower (of course there will be something bigger and better out by then). Your vid card will last you longer..given that dx10 parts will be more of an evolutionary step than a revolutionary step.

I'd say bump your vid card up, it will give you more bang for your buck, then upgrade the other stuff a little further down the road.

I'm running a XP 1700 at 2.2GHz, Radeon 9600XT, 2 GB PC3200 RAM; was thinking that I could get a year more out of my rig if I added a better video card. IMO you could as well.

I have almost the asme system, what video card would be better then a X800XL AGP ? and worth spending the moeny on if you already have a X800XL ?

I think your system is fine for now and not upgrade anything but thats just me.

If I were him I'd upgrade to a 7900 GT or 7950GT....or one of the new X1900 ATI's. Vid cards can last through more upgrade cycles. I'm still using a Gefore4 TI 4200 in one of my PC's..lol.

yeah, RTS games are using as much graphics power as the intense first person shooters. I mean, you just look at the games that are barely starting to use the PhysX engine, and you need a 7900 or x1800 at least to make things look close enough to an xbox 360.

.... I remember months before the release of the highly acclaimed 7800GT, some kid here in the forums was like, "7800GT = everything."

new word: "was"
