Which is the best Distro?

I have already been to a lot of sites talking about linux/unix. The one that I found that was very helpful was Distro Watch. The one distro I was strongly considering was Debian.

My question is, I have an old HP with a:
Celeron 500
128mb RAM
Onboard Video/Sound
20gb HD
Win 98

I am looking for a distro that I can use on the PC mentioned above. I don't want one that will slow it down. I want a small footprint OS. Any help greatly appreciated.

Debian will run fine. I would suggest using fluxbox instead of the heavyweight GNOME or KDE wm's.

I wouldn't recommend Damn Small Linux. Its too barebones and you have more than enough ram and processing power for something more. Debian would run fine, I'd probably choose any other window manager besides KDE. Gnome should be fine too. Or you could just go for Ubuntu.

I can't wait for MepisLite to be available without subscription though. It would have been perfect for you. 😀
