Just use the latest ones. There's generally little benefit to using older drivers with ATI, unless you are actually having problems with the newer ones. Or you're trying to squeeze a couple hundred extra points out of 3DMark for whatever reason.

recent AT article showing performance differences on a 9700Pro across a bunch of Catalyst versions

The 9600Pro has a very similar architecture to the 9800Pro (just fewer pipes and 128-bit memory). If anything, the newer drivers are a little faster than the older ones, even on the 'old' cards.
