Which is the best cable modem?

Hello. I am moving into an apartment in West Lafayette in a few weeks and was thinking of buying my own cable modem. My ISP is going to be Insight Broadband.

My package is 3Mbit down and 384Kb upstream. Which would be the best cable modem to buy as far as performance and stablity goes?

The list of capable modems is here, but I think any DOCSIS should do right?

Please advise,

Thanks - Colin

Yeah.. honestly, I doubt there will be any noticeable difference between any two cable modems. I've had 3 or 4 and I've never thought to myself "oh xyz cable modem was so much better than this one," I just kinda plug them in and forget about them.

Well, one thing I noticed that in my area (suburbs of philadelphia), i was using a toshiba modem that was recommended and said to very good. However, it didn't catch the signal too well after and outage or work or sometimes it just went out. Finally, the thing just broke and luckily this was when comcast gave out free replacements so they gave me a motorola and from then on this thing has been rock solid. I dont see any difference in speed and everyone's situation is different. So, get the lowest priced one and if it doesn't work out too good then just get another one if you can return it. Many places even give out free modem after MIR.

Good Luck

The modem brand DOES in fact effect speeds on some cable networks.
on OOL, their is a noticeable difference between the older sb3100-4100's vs the newer ones, toshiba's and Terayon's with the latter being noticeably faster. I would imagine on the average cable network (sub 3mb speeds) it wont make much of a difference.

So you got 5 answers, and you do not know what to do.

Well that was my initial point, if there was a "Best" you would know by now.

The two Modems that you mentioned are good modems.

Go with the less expensive one.

Yeah I would go with either one and like jack said, whichever is cheaper. I like my Tosh. I only paid $60 for it new at compusa and it doubled the speed of my old SB2100. If I were you, I would find an oold 4100 or something off of ebay to save yourself some loot. At 3mb, you arent going to nitce any difference.
