Which is most heavy-duty DVD burner?

Back in February of 2004, I finally bought a DVD burner. The price had dropped to $62, with free shipping, and I bought 3 of them. One for a friend, one for myself, and one for my Father.

It was the BenQ DW-400a model. I've never had it act flaky or cause any trouble, and I'm still using mine today, though it only burns at 4X, and is only +R compatible.

A year, maybe a year and a half ago, I decided to get a faster dual layer burner. I ordered another BenQ drive. It was July of 2005, and it was a DW-1620. I was enticed to "upgrade" because the price had dropped to $38 per drive. It added dual layer support, 8X burning, and +/- R support. Within just a few months, the thing wouldn't spin up properly. I sent it in for replacement, and waited about two more months for the replacement drive to show up. That one worked fine for a while, but now, after I've had it for about a year, the drive will not eject properly when I push the eject button just over half the time. It is getting so annoying that I'm thinking of replacing the drive.

Obviously, something happened at BenQ between the DW-400a and DW-1620 that saw a marked decrease in drive quality. Maybe cheaper parts were used, or perhaps quality control decreased - I don't know. All I know is that the newer drives certainly don't seem to last. I've had two of the newer ones go bad in a year, while the old one is still going strong. My first clue was the fact that the newer drives don't have the "BenQ" name printed all over the front, like the DW-400a did. I guess if a company is proud of their products, they will shout out their name to everyone.

I guess my question is, should I get another BenQ DVD burner, or go with another brand? Can anyone recommend a DVD burner model where they still put the name on the front of the drive? I figure if they are not trying to hide it, they probably made it to last. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

check out www.cdfreaks.com for some great reviews and suggestions on burners, honestly when I'm looking for a new drive I just browse through some newegg reviews to see if it's loud or if a group of people reported the same problem becuase those are probably the problem drives

Try for other brand name optical drives such as Asus or lightscribe, stay away from no name ones

The answer is simple: Plextor. These are workhorse drives, and aren't cheap snap-together plastic crap with second-tier-quality lasers more appropriate for cat toys.

The easiest way to judge the quality of a DVD burner, a CD burner, or a scanner is heft. This is because the frames on good ones are made from cast aluminum and the internal parts from aluminum or steel, while the cheaper ones (I use "cheap" in the sense of shoddy, not less expensive) rely on plastic.

I've never had a Plextor DVD drive fail, and I've got two of them in the room with me right now.

If you buy one on sale or with a rebate, the price is roughly comparable to one of the inferior quality ones, so it's not like you're going to have to sell a kidney to pay for it.

I have two plextor drives as well (including another at work). But, plextor isn't making their own drives any more (from what I read). So, they're tending to be a bit overpriced now and not the stalwarts the used to be.

My recommendation was always plextor. I've never burned one coaster in hundreds and hundreds of CD/DVD burns. But now I don't know what's best anymore.

What I can say is that my one Lite-On drive makes about 1 in 10 coasters, is 100X louder than any of my plextors, and the eject button works only sometimes.

I liked Plextor back when they were competitively priced (i.e., +$20 for a much better drive); in fact, I recommended them almost without consideration. Now, I don't burn an extreme amount of media, but I find the cheaper Sony/Samsung/Lite-On, etc, drives work just as well 90% of the time. I recently purchased a Samsung 18x drive for around $30.

However, if you don't trust the cheaper brands, seems like Plextor is the way to go (for about $70 more).

sjandrewbsme:

Seems like you're unlucky with that drive. I have owned two Lite-On burners, one CD-RW and a dual layer DVD burner (sold under another brand), and they were both loud as hell, but they got the job done. Very few coasters.

As far as I know, Plextor never manufactured its own drives; it, instead, had them manufactured to its specifications. (Building a plant is expensive, and many manufacturers, even those that don't just slap their names on a product engineered by another company, use contractors that make equipment for a variety of vendors.)

I don't know what the answer is. I do know that my Plextor PX-716A (like my PX-708A which is now in my Linux box) has never made a coaster (unless I botched the bootable CD specs in Nero), it runs fast, and it's very, very quiet. And the eject button always works!

As far as I know, Plextor manufactures most of their own DVD drives. They outsourced even fewer of their CD drives. Their Blu-ray model is a Pioneer.

If you get a PX-755A (currently ranked #1 by MaxPC for the last few months), or a PX-716AL (currently has a $50 MIR), you're getting Plextors, not rebadges. The 755A is a smidgeon faster for DVD-RW burning, but the 716AL has four times as much cache and is a slot-load drive...the difference in price AR is about $8.

Do I have a couple of Plextors? Why, yes, I do. The fastest ripper (TS-40), the classic PlexWriter (12/4/32), and a ho-hum 708A. But that 716AL is looking a bit tempting...

Hmmm...after reading the more recent user reviews at newegg, it appears the 716AL is a three-legged dog after 10-13 months. And if you don't get the rebate...ouch. Spend the extra $8 and go with the 755A if you're going with Plextor, folks.

Otherwise, if you don't mind an older drive at a comparable price with newer drives, I'd recommend the NEC 3500AG...rare nowadays, but a good burner by any standard.

There is no 755A, only the 755SA (SATA) here in the States - make sure before buying that your SATA controller can handle ATAPI drives (all SATA 2 controllers are supposed to handle ATAPI but only a few SATA 1 controllers will). The 760A is the latest true, Sanyo based Plextor PATA DVD +/- R/RW/DL burner available here. And at $70.00 AR, it's the best buy too. I've gotten all my Plextor rebates, but some took a while.

Get em while they last...

The Japanese website Shinmai is reporting that the Plextor brand name will dissapear from the consumer market. Over the years the strong optical storage brand slowly lost market shares due high prices and many new competitors in a highly competitive market. 'King of Quality' as the brand promoted itself was in many eyes a true slogan but unfortunately the price of the claimed quality was simply too high.

Parent company Shinano Kenshi is a large technology company that manufacturers much more than just CD and DVD burners, but is no longer able to compete with much cheaper Taiwanese and Korean brands. The Plextor brand will still be used for industrial equipment and digital sound recording/playback equipment for visual handicapped people.

According to Plextor, they aren't getting out of the optical drive business, just scaling that part of their operations back. I can look up the quote again if I have to. But I think I put the whole thing in a post in a recent burner thread over in the Peripherals section - where this thread belongs anyhoo...

Here's another vote for Plextor.

I bought a dual-layer Lite-On SHM-165 H6S burner a couple months ago and it's starting to get flaky already. :( But my older Plextor PX-712A is still chugging along. :) It was nice having two DVD burners on my main system.

I've never had a Plextor crap out on me although I've had issues with NEC's, BenQ's, Phillips, Memorex, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc, etc...and now Lite-On. I've gone through tons of optical drives. Got my first cd burner(HP 2x) back in '95.

I hope Plextor stays in the optical drive business and maintains their quality. I've never been disappointed with one.

I got into NEC burners because they didnt plaster logos all over the front of the drive like everyone else (name brand, DVD, model # compact disk, RW ..ad-nauseum ) too busy....I know what it does I ordered the damn thing...anyway, it just happens they are great drives. Never had one coaster and I've burnt probably 1000 DVDs... and quiet.

The reason NEC is so plain is that they don't build for retail and the big box pushers like to maintain the fiction that they make everything in the box. There is no Samsung logo on the front SH-S182Ds I have here either.

Not sure it qualifies as a workhorse but I've got 3 NECs and they all burn perfectly. Never had an issue with any burn regardless of media.

i have a plextor 750a that is actually a rebagged teac. i kneed the drive door while it was open and mucked up the plastic gears. it still works, but opens and closes very very slow.

i also have a nec 3550a, and its burned over 500 discs, not a single problem at all. its been my best/favorite burner ive ever had.

I ended up getting 3 of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827136108

I ended up paying $99.51 total, including shipping, for 3 of them.

Right now, they are priced at $28.99 each, so total for 3 would be $96.51

specs:

LG Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE Super-Multi DVD Burner

Model #: GSAH42N

It's a fairly new model, but it has gotten great reviews online:

For my DVD drivers I always buy Pioneer - those are the best drives I ever owned, (currently 1100D) I bought Plextor ones and had to send it back because it wasn't burning to the name brand disks with mentioned speed
For my CD drives I always buy TDK - 52x my current drive.

Those are my suggestions
DVD - Pioneer
CD - TDK
