Which is more likely is causing packetloss: hub or proxy server?

i find that when i go through my hub and proxy server i get more packetloss to games servers then if i connected directly to my cable modem. i get about 5-10% more packetloss. i have a dlink 5 port 10mb hub (4 ports + 1 uplink) and i'm using winRoute proxy server. which is more likely causing the packetloss? proxy or hub?

my hub is kinda crappy. i only get about 650kb/s transfers across it. my friend's hub gets 1mb/s -- 10mb hub

thx in advance

MOre likely of the two would be the Proxy. Hubs pretty much clock the packet out as it's being clocked out. The Proxy has to examine the packet to some degree, and (expecially on slower systems)buffer the ingress packets while it does the examination. If the buffer gets full enough (enough packet delay), some of the packets are likely to time out and be discarded somewhere along the line.

FWIW

Can you hook just your PC and the cable modem to the hub and try it that way? If you see packet loss, it is your hub. If you don't, then the packet loss is probably coming from your proxy server. I agree with Scott that the proxy server is the most likely culprit, but sometimes things like a flaky NIC or a poorly terminated cable can introduce packet loss.
