For those that doubt there is a difference between internet fame and actual fame, I give you that guy that runs 4 chan, moot. Sure his sites Alexa numbers were incredible and have since tapered off. Then theres that overweight Hispanic gay guy that took the surname of a pop culture queen, Perez Hilton. Lets also not forget todays internet famous woman who crashed a White House Party, whats her name, uh, Michaele Salahi.

Then theres people that made their fame "offline" for various reasons including numerous politicians, Hanna Montana, Lady GaGa, the Olsen Twins, Donny Osmond, Steven Hawkings & Tony Romo to name a few.

The newest trend appears to be led by the next generation, a hybrid online/offline phenomenon Justin Bieber. That silly 15 year old Canadian boy was just a nobody on Youtube (like most everybody else ;)). He was then noticed by a producer and eventually signed to a record label. He now is the object of attention of swarms of teen girls, so much so that they almost caused a riot when he cancelled an event at a NY mall.

So which do you think is more fleeting? Internet fame or "real life" fame?

Not sure about fleeting, but the backlash against "internet celebrities" is almost instantaneous, while real-life "celebrities" seem to have a bit more time before getting all of the hate thrown on them.

That kid needs a haircut.

I have to admit it is fun to participate in or at least watch Internet Justice in action. Can you imagine being the object of scorn of an angry mob of millions? D:

I tried growing my hair out. It was fun until I realized what a hassle it was to take care of it. You have to comb it frequently, keep checking it out in a mirror, sleep properly to minimize "bed head" and then comes the sudden reality you can never go outside because wind is not your friend. So I cut it all off. I think if anyone wants to go through all that trouble to look different, more power to them....but I found it to be a mega hassle after about two years. :(

Internet fame.
On average it lasts about a week.
The people the OP mentioned are not the norm.
