Which is first SATA or IDE?

I just built a new computer and I got a new SATA HD for it. Now I that I have windows on the new HD I wanted to stick in my old HD and transfer some stuff from it. But I was wondering when I stick in the IDE drive which will boot first? They both have windows on them. I checked in BIOS to see, but the only option it had was just Hard Drive as a boot option no IDE-0 or anything. So which will boot first the IDE or SATA? The MB is a Chaintech VNF3-250.
 
I'm gonna guess that the PATA (IDE) drive will boot first since it's the first one to be detected by the BIOS during POST.
 
This seems to obvious..............but I'd say the one you set to boot first in the bios....................
 
Sorry to bump an old post, but did you ever resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem. My SATA drive has been working with my VNF3-250 for months, but I've never been able to boot off it with a standard IDE HD plugged in at the same time.
 
I've recently built a new system for my cousin. They setup uses a SATA hard drive. After putting everything together and setting everything up, I connected the old IDE hard drive form the previous system to transfer all of his files. To my surprise, there was no way to boot from the SATA HDD while the IDE HDD was connected (the IDE hard drive has a Windows installation).

It seems that the BIOS will boot from the IDE drive, no matter what. I couldn't even change the boot order in the BIOS, as the SATA hard drive would dissapear from the options list whenever the IDE hdd was plugged in.

I ended up using a IDE-to-USB adapter. Much easier.

BTW, SATA is the third IDE controller. At least in the Asus P4P800 Deluxe.
 
I had been hoping to use my old IDE HD and this SATA at the same time, but I suppose I could go the adapter route, copy my old data, and put this IDE in my Xbox. With the adapter, do you plug the drive in after the system has booted up?
 
There is a option to change the "hard drive" boot order in the BIOS. It is in a different section other than boot order. I don't have a board to look at off hand. It is probably in the chipset options atleast it is on my Epox board.

SCSI is what i would normally use for an IDE controller card, maybe something similar.
 
I have a P4P800 with a sata drive as my main drive and a 120gig ata drive as a backup. (had raid but needed the drive in another machine) Its not a deluxe model but the bios are very similar.

What operating system are you using?

In the bios if you don't set the Onboard IDE opration mode to Enhanced mode and have the enhanced mode support on the S-ATA drive I don't believe ATA drives will work. My ATA drive was not recognized correctly until I set it this way.

I had a small problem with my setup. The 74gb SATA Raptor wouldn't let my westerndigital 120gb drive be recognized as a master on any ide channel. It would just disappear. But it wasn't a huge problem.
 
I'm using XP SP2 and a Chaintech VNF3-250 with the 10/19 bios. "Hard drive" or "hard disk" (I forget which) is the only HD option available under boot order. I have looked around elsewhere but see no other options for setting SATA or SCSI as a first boot device. I also have RAID turned off.

Oh, and I don't see anywhere to turn on Enhanced mode for IDE.
 

brzrkr0: Sorry I was answering another person on the thread that had a similar problem but was using a P4P800 deluxe. I am not familar with your Motherboards bios.

 
I have a ASUS P4PE and would like to add a SATA drive. I currently have an IDE drive attached. Can I use both configurations and is there any special set-up for the SATA?
