Hi,

Which is the fastest AMD CPU I can upgrade to, in order to match the Corsair XMS3200 CAS Cl2 memory?

My motherboard is an ABIT NF7Sv2, BIOS ver 2.1. The present DDR Voltage is 2.7V. I presently have an AMD Athlon 2400XP+ modestly overclocked to 160MHZ FSB, 13,5 multiplier.

Your suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Palmer.

By matching, do mean the chip is overclocked to match the PC3200 (200 FSB) or running at stock speed?

If overclocking, your best bet would be to go with a 2400+/2500+/2600+ Mobile. If not OC'ing, then go with a 3200+ that runs stock at 200 FSB.

Currently @ Newegg:

2500+ Mobile - $77
3200+ - $207

It's pretty much an easy choice....if your hardware can support it (and it looks like it can), then go with one of the lower end Mobiles and OC it.

the 2400+ is $77, the 2500+ is $99 (2600+ is $108), might as well go with the 2600+ for $9 more if you're willing to go with the 2500+ otherwise I'd go with the 2400+.

for what it's worth, the 2400 seems like the best choice right now if you're comparing dollar/Mhz.

I've read something about the Athlon XP 2500+ Notebook version that doesn't have a multiplier lock like the current 2500+'s. I just glanced over the article, so I'm not even sure if the Notebook version will work in a Desktop M/B. Does anyone have any insight to this? Could be worth a look for you, Palmer, if it's compatible.....

Read the reviews on newegg, people are definately using the mobile chips in desktop motherboards. The only thing that makes them "mobile" is that they are able to run at or near desktop speeds at a lower voltage.

There is no physical difference between the mobile Barton chips and their desktop equivalent. As bunny mentioned, the mobiles run at a default voltage of 1.45v as compared to the 1.65v of the desktop chips. The multipliers are unlocked on the Mobiles and can be changed in the BIOS if your board supports it.

I got a desktop 3200+ and it is also unlocked.
