Which is faster the ATI 9500 Pro or the ATI 9600 pro?

Judgeing on the benchmarks it looks like the 9500 is faster is this right? (i'm in the market for a sub 200 dollar card). The nameing screwed it up for me i think. 9600 should be faster.

9500P will be faster than 9600P, just look at the prices. That said, I recommend buying a $205 9700. It's an extra $20, but currently offers better price/performance than the other two cards (meaning it costs 10% more, but is much more than 10% faster at high res with AA & AF).

Now to do some dad convincing hehe....I dunno if i should post this here but it has to do with a video card. I currently have a Pentium 4 1.6 (older core) with a Ti4200. Games are starting to get slow for me (i max out settings). Later on down I plan to have a 2.4C and i guess i'll get the 9700NP....is this a good matchup?

Yes, the 9700NP will scale well, with 3GHz CPU's and possibly beyond. So it'll be a nice improvement now, as it'll offer "free" AA & AF, and it'll do much better with the faster CPU. Your P4 1.6 is really holding your system back--so much so, that you should consider upgrading your CPU/MB(/RAM/PSU, if nec'y) first.

Alrighty thanks alot!...I do plan to upgrade my processor and mobo so I might do that first....after i'm done with that the 9700 NP should be even cheaper maybe just maybe lol. WHere do you see a 9700 NP for $215?

1.6 P4, is that a willie core? Those are the worst my friend. Hell, put any northwood on your system and you will see that 4200 pump out a better framerate.

Did someone say a 9700 pro is $205?

when Overclocked, the 9500pro and 9600pro are almost perfectly identical.

9600pro is probably slower than your current ti4200...

if you're going to upgrade, i would upgrade to at least a 9700,
9500pro isn't much faster than ti4200..

9500pro should be a lil faster then the 9600Pro esp since we've "fixed" and benched more 9500prs then 9600prs it really depends on the specimen you get it can be an awesome ocer or just hit a wall with low quality memories that will limit your results

With no ocs 9500pr is faster

where did you see that?
9600 pro has only 4 pipelines.. it's not even much faster than a 9500 non pro.. let alone a 9500pro..

The Radeon 9600 Pro is the perfect example of bigger numbers not necessarily meaning higher performance; as we noted in our overview of the RV350's technology, the Radeon 9600 Pro is actually more like a regular Radeon 9500 than a Radeon 9500 Pro

As we mentioned in our original article however, expecting the Radeon 9600 Pro's core improvements and higher clock speed to overcome the lack of rendering pipelines and outperform the Radeon 9500 Pro may very well be wishful thinking

Even GeForce4 Ti 4200 owners would be hard pressed to find a reason to upgrade to either one of these cards (FX 5600 Ultra, 9600 pro) outside of DirectX 9 support, which has yet to be truly demanded in a game.
