Which is faster? Nforce 420 built-in, or Voodoo3 3k?

I am looking to upgrade my brother's P3 550 with a Athlon 1.4, and the Nforce seems like a solid choice, as he has many aging components. I was looking at Anand's preview of the Nforce, and it made me wonder... Until he can scrounge up the money to upgrade to a worthwhile card (GF2 Ti/Radeon 7500 or better), which is the better performer, a Nforce 220 with his V3 3000 or a Nforce 420 using his built-in?

Thanks in advance -

i'm not quite sure about the nforce versions, but i would think the 420 would at least have a geforce 2 mx in it. that shouldn't be hard to research. but to answer your question, i would think the 420 *should* be a better choice, since the v3 is showing its age.

from what i can tell the performance should be pretty comprable since the integrated is slightly behind the mx400 i went back to the original mx article and the mx400 slightly outperformed the v3 3000... but then i would suggest due to drivers the geforce drivers have greatly matured since that article so i would probably give the nforce the advantage over the v3... not to mention that it has a lot more newer features that newer/future games are using...

without a direct comparison i couldn't tell you but i would think that it would equal or slightly better the v3...

from what i read the nforce420 is only a little faster than a mx200. you might as well just get an sis735 and put the v3 in it for now

Slightly ? The GeForceMX (the first one) had similar speeds to the V5. I don't think there's any way you can compare both cards. Not to mention that the V3 doesn't do 32-bit rendering, no TnL & 256*256 max texture size.

You might as well go for the nFORCE 420 but I'm not sure it's gonna be out soon.

You guys have got to remeber that the even the dual channel 420 benches nothing like a geforce 2 mx400. Personally I'd take the v3, bt that only because I play UT.

Nforce will probably give you better performance, and definitely better quality. Voodoo3 performs rendering at 16 bit, even though 3dFx used to claim that due to their high-quality dithering it looks like "20 bit", yeah right, I remember that terrible banding in Quake.
